The vibrant cityscape that glows before you from your bedroom window is inspiring and reinvigorating. As your gaze dances along the Manhattan skyline, you might begin to plan your next outing into the the city. Luckily as a resident of RiverHouse 9, we’ve done the planning for you and all you have to do is hop on an 8 minute ferry ride across the Hudson.
The first stamp on your RiverHouse 9 passport should be the chic neighborhood of Chelsea. Known for its glamorous art galleries, gorgeous brownstones, and of course The Highline, you’d likely agree that Chelsea is a great neighborhood to spend a lovely spring day. Better yet, it’s one of the closest neighborhoods to the Midtown W 39th St. ferry station.
Once you’ve stepped off the ferry, take a short 15 minute walk to The Highline. You’ve likely been here before, but the views never get old and neither do the surrounding rotating art series. As you make your way down the glistening riverfront beauty of the Interim Walkway, your first stop should be The Shed, a contemporary arts incubator showcasing all forms of creativity whether it be dance, still art, or storytelling. In the next few months, they will launch their Open Call exhibit featuring 52 up and coming local artists. Before then, make sure to catch their current exhibits Upclose and Frieze New York.
After a busy morning interacting with art, take your opportunity to refuel with a refreshing glass of Kas Limón and a Flauta Jamon Serrano sandwich from José Andres’ Mercado Little Spain. Once you’ve picked up your treats, walk over to the 30th St. entrance of The Highline, where you’ll find Simone Leigh’s Brick House – a masterpiece standing 16 feet tall atop the park depicting the bronze bust of a strong Black woman, on display through the end of spring 2021. This quiet section of The Highline usually has less tourists than the Gansevoort St. entrance, making it the perfect spot to enjoy your lunch in peace and tranquility.
From this point, you can either continue walking atop The Highline enjoying luscious greenery and remarkable views, or you can explore the myriad of boutique art galleries housed beneath the elevated railroad tracks nestled between 28th and 20th st. If you choose the latter, be sure to invite a friend along with you to enjoy and experience this art with. Start your gallery hopping at Friedman Benda, followed by a walk to the world renowned Pace Gallery, then traverse down a few blocks for a funky viewing at Lehmann Maupin.
Now that it’s mid-afternoon, it’ll be time for your second cup of coffee at Intelligentsia Coffee Bar. We recommend trying their spring-inspired Black Cat Fizz, featuring a mix of their signature dark chocolate and brown sugar espresso with zesty orange bitters and tonic – perfect for cooling you down after a brisk walk through Chelsea.
With your refreshing cup of coffee in hand, you still have time to continue your artistic exploration through the neighborhood. One of the last galleries to visit should be the Petzel museum, an internationally recognized contemporary art gallery currently exploring the impact of data and tech on earth. To continue with this theme of art and tech, make Artechouse your final creative destination. This spring, they’re showcasing a cinematic, immersive, and audio visual journey through fractal dimensions – yes, math can be art too.
After hours spent roaming around Chelsea, you’ve likely worked up an appetite for dinner. Take a souvenir of your adventure home with you by making a stop at the historical Chelsea Market – an upscale food hall featuring small business goods and produce from local farms. Grab a freshly baked pie from Filaga Pizzeria, a delicious dessert from Doughnuttery, and unique artisanal goods and groceries from their specialty shops to remind you of your busy day.
Make the most out of spring by wandering across the Hudson to bathe in inspiration and creativity. Whether you choose to explore Chelsea or stay closer to home in Port Imperial, RiverHouse 9 provides the perfect retreat for your upscale lifestyle along the riverfront.
